Onew - Beat Drum

September is the month of SHINee solos, with three of 4 members releasing music or mvs over the subsequent few weeks. It’s fascinating to listen to what they’re as much as beneath new administration, and for Onew the change appears to have ignited a way of groove. After I consider his solo work, I’m extra liable to think about a ballad. Nevertheless, new single Beat Drum (매력) sees him flirting with hip-hop and rhythmic pop.

For me, this can be a good factor. He has a stunning voice for ballads, however there are few issues higher than a SHINee banger. Beat Drum does what it says on its label, giving him a percussive playground to showcase a wide range of efficiency types. His nimble vocals match the sound properly, although the music’s ambitions are finally extra tempered than I might have appreciated. Paradoxically, given its title the percussion is generally forgettable, borrowing sounds we’ve heard in lots of different songs. A larger highlight on precise drums would have been very satisfying.

Melodically, Beat Drum is a combined bag. It’s sprightly throughout, but many of the hooks slide by with out leaving a lot impression. An ascending “da da da” rounds out every refrain and verges on cloying, although Onew’s easy vocal lends it credence. The music will in all probability find yourself rising on me (as most SHINee-related issues do), however for now I’m not fairly offered on it.
