James Gunn admits Superman confusion was 'unfair' to Henry Cavill

James Gunn has admitted the confusion round Henry Cavill’s return to Superman was “actually unfair”.

The 42-year-old actor had introduced he was set to reprise the function, solely to disclose two months later that he would not be a part of the brand new DC Studios co-head’s imaginative and prescient for the franchise, and now James has defined he and Peter Safran had been bowled over when his return was introduced.

Talking on the Pleased Unhappy Confused podcast, James stated: “We had been coping with attempting to determine if we might take the job at DC Studios, and we’re speaking to David Zaslav and all of the authorized folks there, and determining what our offers could be.

“And the day our deal closed, hastily they had been saying that Henry was again.

“I’m like, what’s going on? Like, we all know what the plan is, the plan was to return in and do Superman.

“That was actually unlucky, I’m like, this poor man.”

The brand new DC bosses had been impressed with how Henry dealt with the information.

James continued: “And so Peterand I [knew] the suitable factor to do is to take a seat down with [Cavill] and speak to him.

“And we sat down, we talked to him, he was an absolute gentleman, a fantastic man about it. He stated, ‘The one factor I ask is that I’m capable of reveal it myself versus it coming from you guys.’

“It was actually unfair to him and was a complete bummer.”

James defined there have been exterior influences who “wished to tackle what they wished to do at DC and had been attempting to power their means and it simply was by no means part of the equation.”

The filmmaker – who solid David Corenswet within the title function of his Superman film – was requested if it might be “too complicated” to recast Henry in a distinct DC Universe function, and he admitted he’s eager to work with the Witcher star.

He stated: “No, as one other character? Completely not. I talked to him about it on that day. I might like to put Henry in one thing.”
