Yoon Sanha (ASTRO) - Dive

Somebody must do a case examine on why so many idol soloists debut with probably the most subdued (ie: uninteresting) materials you might probably think about. Have they been so overwhelmed down by the maximalist wants of Ok-pop’s idol group system? Are they below the impression that — above all else — they should present some kind of internal pathos or reflection to be credible? Regardless of the case, solo releases typically observe comparable sonic paths.

Because the youngest of Astro, Yoon Sanha made his debut as a smiley, overalls-wearing child. He and the group have clearly been by way of loads since 2016 so it’s not shocking to see his solo work take a darker flip. I simply want this tone got here together with an equally evocative track, as a result of Dive does little to focus on his attraction as an artist. Sonically, it feels mired within the gloomy, melodically flat territory that many western male pop stars have reverted to over the previous decade.

With that stated, Dive grows extra attention-grabbing because it reaches its refrain. The verses do nothing for me, however I benefit from the swell of the track’s centerpiece, particularly when it’s accompanied by synth strings. This dramatic environment works properly with the melody however makes me want the track actually took the chance to interrupt free from its confines. At below three minutes, there’s no room for a bridge and Dive ends simply because it’s beginning to get good. It’s as if we’re given the primary jiffy of a slow-burn, five-minute spotlight however the producers have held again the payoff that makes all of it work.
